Why a Wooden Spoon is Important when Making Tomato Sauce
It may seem like a strange thing, but for serious pasta lovers, or tomato sauce lovers, using a wooden spoon when making tomato sauce is taken pretty seriously. At least that’s what my Nonna taught me.
Whether it’s just an old wives tale or not, there are many folks who say there is scientific truth to the fact that a metal spoon will impart a metallic taste to the sauce due to the acidity in the tomatoes coming into contact with it. Wood is the preferred material to use when making tomato sauce because of its rounded edges and non-reaction with the tomatoes.
I say go for the wood spoon, if for no other reason than to taste that wonderful sauce with the rounded edges of the spoon without interference from cold metal or stainless steel and definitely not plastic or silicone. Besides, wooden spoons are pretty to have in your repertoire of kitchen utensils, ever-useful and something in which every home cook should have at least more than a few.
Did you mean “anything other than a wooden spoon”?
I was confused there too.
@Chalizee and A.S. – yes, sorry there was a bit of a typo there and I’ve since corrected myself. Hope it’s more clear now 🙂
Wooden spoon all the way! There is a big difference and I use bamboo wood to make all my dishes plus it is nicer to your pots and pans.
@Rahmah- I do agree and bamboo is also my second choice. I should have mentioned that in my post, so thank you for the reminder!
I just wanted to say that my mom was a firm believer in usung wooden spoons.. and as we cooked most of oour dishes wiht Tomato, the reaction of metalic spoons with the tomato and spices were her reasons 🙂
But won’t it stain the wooden spoon red?
