AFFOGATO: ITALIAN COFFEE & ICE CREAM

If you love coffee and ice cream, this quick dessert recipe is for you. Affogato is an Italian word for the super delicious coffee drink with ice cream added to hot coffee- and it’s fantastico, especially in the summer when you want coffee, but you also want ice cream… 

My Sicilian grandmother used to do this all the time, particularly in the summer time. She would make the espresso, then when she realized it was too hot (and hot outside) her eyes would light up and she would go to the freezer for un gelato.

Without asking you, she would throw a scoop of vanilla ice cream into your espresso cup and continue to sip her own, with that sparkly smile and a little bit of froth on her upper lip, bless her. I miss her so much…

I love to sip the espresso, but eat the gelato with a spoon…
