Above and Beyond Halal: Saffron Road Raises American Consumer Expectations, Too

Over the past couple of years you may have noticed that I’ve really grown fond of certain products for one reason or another. I have criteria when determining which products to purchase for my family’s consumption and those I would serve to guests; those are the same criteria I set in deciding which to include in my presentations on healthy cooking and eating, as well as writing about on this site and elsewhere.

Saffron Road

What are those ideal criteria?

  • Halal (permissible according to Islamic dietary guidelines)
  • Tayyib (pure= pesticide free, non-toxic)

The combination of the two really provides the ideal type of food in my mind, but it’s not always so simple to find and in today’s complicated world of the modern food industry, things are not always so black and white, either. Some foods may be labeled as ‘halal’, but may contain synthetic ingredients or chemicals that aren’t exactly healthy, nutritious or safe. Others may appear as being without issue in terms of their halal factor, but might be genetically-modified which is controversial at best. (Genetically modified food is a hot topic right now, as many consumers are fighting to label foods that are GMO; others are trying to ban them altogether with the justification that they are unsafe for consumption as testing on animals has proven to be detrimental to health).

Saffron Road has always been at the top of my list for halal food that meets my criteria of also being tayyib. Not only are they certified by IFANCA to be halal, but they’ve also taken enormous steps to ensure other certifications that can be appreciated by all consumers: certified gluten-free, antibiotic free and certified humane products. Way to go to raise standards not just for the halal industry, but also for American consumer expectations on the quality of food.

But don’t just take my word for it. Read what others have to say.

Dawood Yasin, the Muslim Chaplin of Dartmouth College and a brand ambassador for Saffron Road, says “When choosing food for myself and my family, I look to products that meet the criterion of halal in its most comprehensive meaning. Yes, I am very concerned with the manner by which food is processed. However, in additions to this, I need to confirm that the company that I purchase from strives to meet the highest industry standards. Saffron Road is a company that is at the forefront of ethical animal treatment, and at the forefront of addressing the needs of health-conscious consumers. Can we find another product that is gluten free, GMO-free, and antibiotic & hormone free, and halal?”

It’s also important to recognize the professional opinions of those in the halal industry who see products come and go all the time. Naazish YarKhan, Director Content Strategy, IFANCA is one of them. She says,

“Halal is more than about the way an animal has been slaughtered. It is as much about how it has been raised and fed. It really is heartening to see halal brands willing to go the extra mile, to ensure animal welfare.  As a company that certifies the Saffron Road brand as halal, we are very proud of the lengths that Saffron Road has gone to create value for consumers.”

Susan Labadi is the Project Coordinator for the American Halal Association and Contributor of Halal Connect Magazine and says, Saffron Road is defining Halal in America: wholesome, ecologically balanced, humane, and delicious!”

I think Dawood Yasin sums up the emotional side of having a company we can be proud of for raising the bar of excellence in food standards that doesn’t limit halal food to only Muslim consumers:

A few years ago I could have never imagined a halal brand of this quality, and would have never expected to find this brand available nationally. The range of Saffron Road products and its broad appeal is blessing for all to enjoy. As an American Muslim this makes me proud and happy. Proud, because an American company is setting the global standard for halal products. And happy, because options for top quality halal products are ever increasing!”

Isn’t that what truly halal and tayyib food should be?

Have YOUR say- how important is it to you that a business go above and beyond halal to ensure that it meets additional criteria for food quality, safety and health?

  2. I’m so happy that it’s gluten-free too. Yvonne, is it normally hard to get halal gluten-free? Lately, I’ve had better luck finding gluten-free kosher, and halal seems hit or miss. It’s frustrating.
