Above and Beyond Halal: Saffron Road Raises American Consumer Expectations, Too

Over the past couple of years you may have noticed that I’ve really grown fond of certain products for one reason or another. I have criteria when determining which products to purchase for my family’s consumption and those I would serve to guests; those are the same criteria I set in deciding which to include in my presentations on healthy cooking and eating, as well as writing about on this site and elsewhere.

Saffron Road

What are those ideal criteria?

Healthy Snacking Ideas | My Halal Kitchen

Healthy Snacking

With kids back to school and everyone seeming to be on more of a straightforward schedule, it also seems to make mealtime more structured, though perhaps there’s less time to get full meals on the table in between homework and sports schedules. I don’t have kids, but juggle a hectic work schedule and I’m the only one cooking {most of the time}.

savories up close

Sometimes in the middle of the day or even just before dinner when my husband comes home, I like to have something to nibble on while I can still cook a quick and healthy meal without being completely rushed for time. I’m picky about snacks, though. I like them to be healthy, but no processed and although I know that fruits are great, I actually prefer them after dinner, sort of as dessert (pulling back into my Sicilian roots and way of eating).

Culinary & Cosmetic Uses of Argan Oil | My Halal Kitchen

Culinary and Cosmetic Uses of Argan Oil

Have you ever tried argan oil?  It is some really amazing stuff that is great for cooking as well as making yourself beautiful on a budget…not that you need any more beautifying, of course.  In the past year I’ve been using it in my cooking and even more so on my sensitive skin (the cosmetic grade) in a massive effort to ward off wrinkles and dry skin and everything else that will help me look younger than I am. Am I the only woman who does that?  Actually, I’m also just really averse to using expensive cosmetics with fragrance or chemicals that I don’t feel comfortable putting on my face.

Enough from me- read on as Dana of Arganic and Joél of Saadia Organics– two women intricately involved in the production of one of nature’s finest oils ever discovered. I’ll let them tell you more about this amazing oil squeezed out of a fruit in Morocco…

Myth #3: The Halal Slaughter is Barbaric

Some people have an issue with any meat that is ritually sacrificed or slaughtered; others have an issue with slaughtering any animals for food and regard it as barbaric. In Islam, while Muslims are not mandated to eat meat, they aren’t prohibited from it, either. Everything in balance is a key principle in Islam and there may be no other place where that is beneficial than to our stomachs.

Saffron Road’s Example of Sustainable Business in the Halal Industry

In my quest to seek out ethically-sound businesses that also put out a quality halal product, I have come across a small handful I would recommend, mainly because the owners behind them are forthcoming about the origins of their ingredients and how they ensure what we’re buying is not mingled with any inhumane treatment of people, animal, or environment. Eco-halal, a term coined to include environmentally-friendly practices with a focus on maintaining halal, comes to mind here.

My Favorite Products for Nurturing Winter Skin

Dry winter skin is the worst and after living much of my life in cold climates, I would think that it would be pretty easy to find products that help- I mean, really help to moisturize and nurture my super-sensitive skin. Add on to the fact that I’m always on the lookout for products that don’t contain animal ingredients, chemicals, synthetics or any harsh substances and the list of things I can or want to use really dwindles.

This winter I’ve been fortunate enough to learn about a couple of products that are incredibly helpful- one was right under my nose the whole time. Check them out and be sure to share some of your favorites, too, by commenting.

Saffron Road’s New Line of Vegeterian Entrees

You may have already heard about Saffron Road’s new vegetarian entrees, which are making quite a buzz on places like Facebook and Twitter. Vegetarians, vegans and those who are gluten-free are raving about the flavors and quality of these products, and I couldn’t agree more.

These Manchurian Dumplings photographed above were soft, saucy and had a nice kick of spice to them. The ginger tasted so fresh that it came as a really nice surprise- how often do you find that in a frozen entree? This is done right. (It’s also suitable for vegans).

Halal Pepperoni Pizza Bread

I love Fridays and for some reason I’m always craving pizza on Friday evenings. Maybe it’s the comfort food factor or the fact that it just seems so easy to prepare, at least if you’re not doing everything from scratch. So, you’ll be relieved to find this recipe for a semi-homemade pizza bread that you can make quite easily and without a lot of mess. If you have the homemade bread and sauce already done, you’ll be really proud of yourself; if not, no worries- it’s still a great quick meal, alongside a nice salad, of course.

I’m also happy to report that this recipe calls for using a halal, certified-organic pepperoni that does not have nitrates- super hard to find!  I have steered clear of nitrites in my food (mostly found in processed meats like hot dogs, salami and pepperoni) for a very long time because I had read way too many unhealthy facts about them. Now, researchers have recently published information that indicates a link between sausage and cancer, or basically foods with nitrites and their link to cancer. Alhamdullilah (thank God) for companies like Whole Earth Meats who are trying so hard to bring us halal, organic and chemical-free food. The least we can do back is to show our support by purchasing their products and spreading the word about them to others- anyone interested in eating better and knowing more about the origins of their food.

I used halal, organic beef pepperoni by Whole Earth Meats, shredded mozzarella from Trader Joe’s, and Pomi tomato sauce by Parmalat
