A few years ago I got rid of all my makeup that had any sort of dangerous or questionable ingredients (i.e. chemicals like parabens and petrochemicals that are allegedly linked to cancers, ones I couldn’t understand or that contained pork by-products). That didn’t leave me with but a few brands I found at Whole Foods Market, The Vitamin Shoppe, or the plant-based makeup by Origins. Thankfully, the organic & all-natural beauty line of cosmetics has grown, but what is really exciting is a new brand called Amara Halal Cosmetics. It’s not only free of any pork-based by-products, it’s also suitable for vegans and free of parabens.
Here’s what Shamalia Mohamed, founder of the Los Angeles, CA based company, has to say:
“Studies show that women who apply lipstick end up “eating’ the lipsticks via absorption through their skin, by licking their lips, or when they eat/drink while wearing it. 4 to 9 pounds of lipsticks are consumed as result in an average woman’s lifetime. Imagine all the products currently in the market that are made with chemicals, fatty acids, alcohol, gelatin, or other ingredients that could be extracted from animals such as pigs.”
She also says, “Halal isn’t limited to what is consumed as food but also applies to what is put on our skin.” I couldn’t agree more. After all, the skin is the largest organ in our body and we now know that transdermal absorption is more real than we’ve ever realized before (think transdermal pharmaceuticals out in the market now).
I was fortunate enough to be able to try a large portion of the line of Amara’s new cosmetics and can attest to the fact that they are well-made, great quality and have a lovely choice of color palettes to suit a variety of skin tones. Now maybe I can finally look a little more alive in my cooking videos without having to worry so much about everything I’m putting on my face, too! They’re completely free of animal products (yay for vegans!), alcohol, gluten (how cool is that for gluten-free folks), petrochemicals, and other harsh chemicals. Also, since the ingredients are certified-organic and certified by IFANCA, that would also make them halal and ethical as a result.
How does she do all that? Well, I’ll stick to cooking and leave the make up to her…
