My recipe for Slow Cooker Haleem is a favorite in our house during Ramadan as an Iftar meal and many Muslim households have a similar version they hold dear. What helps me make the best haleem and many other dishes like perfectly braised meats, stews, and even soups that require slow cooking is the Calphalon Electrics 7-Quart Slow Cooker, one kitchen appliance I use over and over again.

  1. biryani! this has to be perfect for dishes like biryani, which requires the right temperature with the right amount of time to turn out perfect. many times, the biryani ends up being burnt at the bottom and the rice still remains slightly uncooked because of the unevenness of the temperature throughout the pot.

  9. I have been making kitchari, the Indian version of this dish ever since sister-in-law gave me my first pressure cooker 15 years ago.
    I make it with several types of pulses (lentils), cracked wheat, ginger and garlic, beef, spices, and long grain rice, white or brown Basmati. Indians consider it an ayurvedic food to aid digestion, especially when one is fasting!

  16. My mother used to make a “hareesa” only during Ramadan — a stew with fall-off-the-bone goat meat, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, black peppers, lentils and wheat — and we used to drizzle it with fresh lemon juice. Hearty and good. I think that’s what I’d try in the slow cooker first.

I always had difficulty making it in two different pressure cookers because as per my mom’s recipe, I first cook wheat and lentils in one and then lamb shoulder with the spices and onion in another cooker. If I get this slow cooker, things would be so much easier and I can cook the entire dish in it as per this recipe!

  20. I would certainly make an Uzbek national dish called ”no’xatsho’rak”. It is cooking lots of lamb with spices and overnight soaked chick peas. Delicious!!! For sure, this slow cooker is a dream for a low-income family like mine.

    I’ve always heard about people cooking haleem in a slow cooker but never tried it myself. I would like to cook chili in a slow cooker. I love slow cooking my chili on the stove until all the meat gets nice and tender and the slow cooker would definetly help me with this.

  24. What wouldn’t I slow cook? Soup, stew, meatballs, you name it! The first thing I want to try is caramelizing onions and french onion soup. It’s too hot in my kitchen to sit there stirring onions for over an hour!

    A slow cooker would get a great workout at my house. InshaAllah the first thing I would make would be oxtails.

  28. I think the first thing I would make, if I could afford it, is a leg of lamb. My husband loves lamb but we are in Florida and it is too hot to have the oven on all day to slow cook a whole bone-in leg of lamb. I haven’t had a slow cooker in years, but have been eyeballing them at the store for quite a while, just can’t afford one right now.

  30. I would definitely have to say Lamb Shanks… Ohh and chicken. Chicken when overcooked, become cottony, and tough. I am a young cook who is just starting out, and i would love to try more recipes espec with the slow cooker. Plus my husband absolutely love tender meat tht is all off the bone style.

  32. The first dish would either be a chili or a stew. I’ve started utilizing slow cooking techniques more recently but with the kids eating first and us later, having a slow cooker with a warm setting would be beneficial.

  34. I slow cook tough meats in my circulon/t-fal Dutch ovens. Although many people use pressure cooker for convenience, I’ve noticed that the results in terms of taste, texture etc are much better in the slow cooking process. Since I have an electric cooking range, slow cooking is fine but if I had to operate on gas, I m sure I would not have been able to manage the heat. Only after reading this post, I’m realizing what a great time and energy saver this slow cooker can be. Time saver in terms of not having to baby sit the meal like what I do with my Dutch oven. I have to check every half hour if the meat has enough moisture/sauce to cook in. If I have this slow cooker, I would use it everytime I prepare a mutton curry. I cook the mutton with very little oil, onions, tomatoes, ginger, garlic, spices, lots of cilantro and when the meat is cooked, I add any vegetable at hand – okra, beetroot, potato, turnip, beans etc and finish it off. Ofcourse I will also try my first haleem in this. I pray that this slow cooker goes to the one who needs it the most.

    I had been so busy in school and training that I never had time to cook. But, now that I am working, I have realized the importance of eating healthy. The first thing I would do is make vegetarian chilli with fresh ingredients. Nothing canned or frozen. If I win, this will the beginning of a new way of eating!

  57. If I win this slow cooker insha allah I will make some paya which is a traditional breakfast dish of Pakistan. The main ingredients of the dish are the two ends of a cow, goat or lamb. It is considered a delicacy in pakistan.

  61. I would agree with you. Haleem is probably the dish i would love to first make in the slow cooker, since all the mixed lentils require slow cooking over a long period of time to get that ideal texture. Haleem has always been a ramadaan favourite in our household.

  73. I’d make my mother in law’s famous sausage mostacholi recipe with lots of mushrooms! She has an authentic Italian tomato sauce recipe that she got from her grandfather that she uses in the mostacholi. She lets the sausage cook in that sauce all day until it becomes tender. Sounds wonderful and I would love to try it! :)
